Puerto Escondido is promoted as the “Surf Capital” and is one of the most important tourist attractions on the southern Mexican coast of Oaxaca. The main attractions are its beaches. Zicatela Beach is world famous and hosts major surfing competitions, while other beaches like Carrizalillo and La Punta have gentle waves and are great to learn to surf.

Twin Towns
Puerto Escondido is actually made up of two municipalities – San Pedro Mixtepec and Santa Maria Colotepec. Each of these towns have offices close to the beach, but their many offices are 30 minutes away from the coast.
The most recent government census information records a combined population of 77 thousand with the two municipalities of San Pedro Mixtepec and Santa Maria Colotepec.
