Cycling Routes

There are plenty of routes to ride bicycles in and around Puerto Escondido. Here are a few to help you get around and enjoy your bike rides.

Las Letras tour

Ride the 23km (1 hour) route around Puerto Escondido and visit 8 of the landmarks displaying in large coloured letters the name of the location. View the “Las Letras” cycling route on Strava.

Breakfast or Brunch at Quequestle

This is one of the best rides you can do! Leave early and enjoy the quite country roads. Then after about 1 hour you will arrive at a quaint comedor to eat traditional homemade local food – prepared right in front of you.

40km Salitre to Quequestle Gravel Cycling Route

Starting at the hi-way 200 in Puerto Escondido, the cycling route goes via La Union then up and over into El Salitre, where it goes right at the T intersection and up over to the small town of Quequestle (where you can stop for some delicious food and drinks) before heading back to the suburb of Marinero (near where the route began).

The 40km ride takes about 3hrs+ with about 950m of climbing elevation (some parts are quite steep so having a good climbing gear will be necessary.)

Playa Delfines and Loma Bonita gravel cycling route

This gravel cycling route of 33km will take about 2 hours and visits the beach and the hills just outside of Puerto Escondido.

Cycling Routes on Strava – Road, Gravel, MTB

There are endless cycling routes that can be ridden around Puerto Escondido but here are a few to consider. Most of the routes you can reduce in length quite easily.

Domingo relax ride

There are a small group of local MTB cyclists who slowly ride this 35km route most Sunday mornings. They take about 2 hours and often stop for breakfast along the way.

Zicatela Market to Colotepec town (and back)

The route from Puerto Escondido to the town of Colotepec is all pavement with a few rolling hills. The round trip is 36km and takes most people about 2 hours to complete.

Puerto Escondido to San Pedro (and back)

This is a good ride on pavement that goes into the hills just outside of Puerto Escondido to the next town of San Pedro. The 90mins+ round trip of 34km (600m of elevation) has some challenging climbs of a few kms. The descents after the climbs are worth the effort though. And if you are still wanting more, you can keep riding and visit other places nearby.

Pto. Esc. <-> Cascada de Reforma

Road and gravel circuit ride from Puerto Escondido to the Cascada De Reforma Mixtepec. – 70km, 3hrs+, 1500m elevation.

Pto. Esc. <-> Paso Ancho

75km loop (out and back) on a MTB/gravel bike from Puerto Escondido to Paso Ancho and back. 4 hours+, 1100m elevation.

Pto Esc <-> Santa Elena el Tule

Ride from Puerto Escondido along the costal hi-way 200 to Santa Elena el Tule. The 60km+ round trip takes most people about 3hrs. Please be extra careful on the way out of town since there is no bike lane.

There are plenty of enjoyable routes to ride bicycles in and around Puerto Escondido. You can ride by yourself, but riding with locals and the Recreational Cyclists of Puerto Escondido club is even better.
